After the search for the nature of individual difficulties, social accounts of mathematics learning have proliferated. More recently, culture has become more and more identified as the key to understanding the ground on which the learner appropriates meaning. The December 1996 issue of Quadrante will focus on the theme of the mathematics classroom with emphasis on social and cultural aspects. The aim of this focus issue is not to present a systematic overview of the field, but rather to illustrate some of the research avenues currently being examined. You might discuss various facets of the problem. Contributions will be grouped and edited according to the topic of analysis.
