CHARTER

details you are therefore kindly referred to the Portuguese
original.
Only the essential points are given here:
1.The Portuguese Mathematical Society is a private,
scientific, not-for-profit
association, set up according to portuguese law. Members
are portuguese
individuals and institutions but membership is not restricted
to such.
2.Aims of the SPM are the promotion and extension of
mathematical
knowledge.
3.To this end the Society undertakes various publications
and holds
regular meetings, conferences and symposia. The SPM,
among other
initiatives, organizes seminars, workshops, summer schools,
short
courses and visits by mathematicians. The SPM cooperates
with other
institutions, be they national or international, public
or private,
for profite or not-for-profit, corporations, government
agencies,
research or teaching schools. In particular, cooperation
with other
scientific societies around the world is encouraged.
The SPM is founder
member of the European Mathematical Society (EMS).
4. The SPM has five types of members: regular, student,
institutional,
sponsor and honorary. Regular, student and honorary
members are individuals.
Institutional members are institutions. Sponsor members
are institutions
or individuals.
5.Institutional members are institutions with an interest
in Mathematics
or mathematical activities of any kind. Institutional
members have
a voting weight not exceeding to five regular members.
Individuals or
institutions of any nature which give substantial donations
to the SPM
may be accepted as sponsor members and they have no
voting rights.
Individuals who are distinguished mathematicians or
have rendered valuable
services to the SPM may be accepted as honorary members.
Honorary members
pay no dues and have no voting rights.
6.Guidelines for action stem for the General Assembly
of regular,
student members and the representatives of institutional
members.
The General Assembly shall meet at least once in every
two years. The General
Assembly elects its President and two Secretaries, a
Board of Directors
formed by five persons and a Finance Committee formed
by three persons,
all appointed for a two year term.
