THE SOCIETY
SPM stands for "Sociedade Portuguesa de Matemática"
which is our
legal name in portuguese and means "Portuguese
Mathematical Society".
The SPM is a private, scientific, not-for-profit association.
The Society was founded in 1940 for the promotion and
extension of
mathematical knowledge. Only after the democratic revolution
of 1974
all steps have been taken to fully legalize the SPM,
since, under the
ancient regime, the Society was repressed
and many of its members persecuted.
The SPM is registered with all
pertinent government offices, including the National
Registry for
Corporate Names, it has an internal revenue service
identification number
and its charter was published in the official government
publication
"Diário da República".
The main activities of the SPM are the publication
of Periodicals,
and
the organization of meetings and conferences.
The Society also organizes the "Olimpíadas
Nacionais de Matemática"
for young people and promotes the participation of portuguese
teams
in " The International Mathematical
Olimpics" and "Olimpíadas Ibero-Americanas
de Matemática"
The Society has reciprocity membership agreements with
many other mathematical
societies. It is a founding member of CIM - Centro
Internacional de
Matemática, an international research mathematical
center founded
in Portugal in 1993 under the auspices of the SPM. It
is also a founding
member of the EMS - European Mathematical Society.
