It seeks to continue at a European venue the tradition established by the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM), founded by Professors Bert Waits and Franklin Demana of the Ohio State University, and held annually in the United States of America since 1988. That tradition has been widely influential in the effective use of technology in mathematics teaching. ICTMT-3 continues as the third European conference (the first in Birmingham, England, 1993 and the second in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1995). Wolfgang Fraunholz, University of Koblenz (Germany) John Searl, The University of Edinburgh (UK) Bert Waits, The Ohio State University (USA) 1st ANNOUNCEMENT - ICTMT - 3 Koblenz The third European International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching will bring together classroom practitioners, curriculum developers, mathematical education researchers and university lecturers, all of whom share a desire to improve the quality of student learning. Keynote lectures and invited lectures by distinguished speakers will be complemented by a programme of specialist short talks and workshops. We hope there will be an exhibition of books and products by publishers, software and calculator companies. The conference will take place at the campus of the University in Koblenz, situated on the Rhine peninsula of Koblenz-Oberwerth, one mile from the main railway station of Koblenz. The Koblenz University is part of the University Koblenz-Landau, a university of Rhineland-Palatinate with nearly eight thousand students, half of whom study in the four faculties of educational sciences, of letters, of natural sciences and of computer sciences in Koblenz. Training many teacher students on the one hand and many computer science students on the other at the university, one endeavours to connect education with the use of computers. Koblenz is a two thousand years old city, situated in the centre of the famous Rhine valley, where the Mosel joins the Rhine. It provides access to many sites in and outside the town, like the old city with famous buildings and churches, the "Deutsches Eck", the Loreley at St. Goarshausen, many old castles of the Rhine valley, the monastery of Maria Laach, the Lahn valley with Bad Ems and Limburg. Thirtyfive miles north of Koblenz lies the city of Bonn, sixty miles north K=F6ln (Cologne), sixty miles south Main= z and hundred miles south-west Luxembourg. The International Airports of Frankfurt, of Cologne/Bonn and of Duesseldorf are all convenient for Koblenz. There are rapid train connections from these airports to Koblenz. Inter City Trains run through Koblenz from the south of Germany (Munich, Stuttgart, Freiburg (Black Forrest)) to the north (Hamburg) and as well to the east (Berlin). A wide range of good quality accomodation is available in Koblenz. The conference languages will be English and German. The conference fee will be DM 200 (payment before 01.07.1997, DM 220 payment later) and will include the cost of lunches, coffees, teas, the Tuesday afternoon excursion and the proceedings published on a CD-ROM. In developing economies, it may also provide a vital supplement to scarce teaching resources. 3.Technology and Assessment The introduction of computer based assessment for diagnostic testing, monitoring and grading demands a careful appraisal of its validity and reliability. Its role in formative and summative assessment of mathematical skills and understanding and the implementation of schemes of assessment will be discussed. 4.Ways Forward - Future Trends The issues arising from the conflicting interests of learners, teachers und technologists will be debated in the context of ever more powerful technology and of the needs of the next generation. The nature and future role of mathematics in education will be examined. Keynote Speakers will include Peter Deussen, Universit=E4t Karlsruhe (D) Mathematical Proofs made by Computer Programmes Wolfgang A. Dolejski, Maria H. X-Comment: Educacao em Matematica <fontfamily><param>Times</param><bigger><bigger>Este documento apareceu numa lista internacional de educacao e matematica. </bigger> <bigger>2.6. Nenhum artigo sera apresentado ou publicado a nao ser que todas as partes registadas como autores ou nomeadas nos agradecimentos tenham tido a oportunidade de ler e comentar o esboco final.</bigger> <bigger> ********************************** </bigger></bigger></fontfamily> Joao Pedro da Ponte Dep Educacao-Fac Ciencias-Univ Lisboa Edificio C1-Campo Grande 1700 LISBOA-PORTUGAL fax office (351-1)-750-0082 tel. office (351-1)-757-3141 ext 1103/2078/2522 tel. home (351-1)-363-0861
