======================================================================== 4th International Symposium on DERIVE and the TI - 92 Fun in Learning Mathematics August 7 - August 9, 1997 Saeroe Hus, Kungsbacka, Sweden Austrian Center for Didactics of Computer Algebra Conference chairman: Helmut Heugl Program committee: Bert Waits, Terence Etchells, Paul Drijvers, Josef Boehm, Helmut Heugl and David Sjostrand (chair and local organiser). Keynote speakers: Bernhard Kutzler, David Stoutemyer, Bert Waits Contributions, so far, by Josef Boehm, Austria, Sergey Biryukov, Russia, Terence Etchells, UK, Helmut Heugl, Austria, Pam Norton, Australia, Wolfgang Proepper, Germany, Vladimir Rovensky, Russia, David Sjostrand, Sweden, Johann Wiesenbauer, Austria, Otto Wurnig, Austria. Successful students of mathematics have, with no or very few exceptions, fun in learning mathematics. Computer algebra systems (CAS) have existed for quite a long time. There are many teachers around the world, who are very fascinated by CAS and who really love to work with CAS. How can we ensure that our students will experience the joy of mathematics? How can we use computer algebra to insure that math lessons will be lessons where students (and the teacher) have fun when they are learning mathematics? Can teachers make a computer algebra assisted math learning experience so exciting that students will not want to leave the class when the class period is over? This conference is the fourth in a series of conferences following Krems «92, Krems«93, Honolulu«95, in which educators from around the world meet to discuss ideas and initiate new developments. Emphasis is on lectures and working groups. Participation is by accepted application only. The goals of the conference are to exchange and to work out good examples and ideas how to use Computer Algebra (CA) to make the learning of mathematics fun and to initiate the writing of books, booklets and articles on the above theme The programme committee invites submissions of contributions to 45 min lectures or working group topics. It is also possible to attend without presenting a lecture or leading a working group. In this case please state your academic background and/or your past contributions to this field. Possible topics for lectures and/or working groups are CA and Trigonometry CA and Calculus CA and Probability and/or Statistics CA and Geometry etc. or New topics for making mathematics fun Mind puzzles, riddles, classroom games and their value for mathematics Submissions shall state the topic and describe the author«s input to his topic. Deadline for submissions is June 1. Notifications of acceptance will be mailed on June 15. The site Kungsbacka is a city 30 km south of Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast. The conference will take place at Saeroe Hus, a conference hotel by the sea 8 km from the center of Kungsbacka. Saeroe is a fashionable sea side resort, where the former Swedish kings, Oscar II and Gusaf V used to spend their summers, playing tennis, sailing and drinking Swedish punch. There will be a lot of tourist activities in Gothenburg in August 1997, e.g. Gothenburg will be the final port of THE CUTTY SARK TALL SHIPS RACE 14 - 17 AUGUST. Registration fee: SEK 700 ($ 95) Costs: Single or double room, breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee, SEK: 1200 - 1500 ($165 - 205) per day (excl VAT 25 %) A few grants are available for participants needing help with the conference fee and/or accommodation.
