That is not true. Both me and Thomas were watching the race in > Rai Due (among other channels). So, some of the comments based on that: [Big Snip] I just saw some press reviews: Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy) headlined with "Schumi Madness": "Italy felt like owning a diamond, it admired his colors and his beauty, only to see his pride and joy thrown away in the garbage. Depressing, Schumi could have been beaten, but end the race as a gentleman, not like that. We would prefer to wait for a happy ending to Ferrari winning the championship." Il Messagero (Italy): "A failed attempt of murder. Schumi, that was a stab in the back for the entire sport, and there is no excuse for it". Corriere dello Sport (Italy): "Villeneuve, you are the legend, Schumacher, now you have to say you are sorry." Tuttosport (Italy): "Schumi like crazy. Maranello has booed you off the stage. You've lost your face. But the sport has won and put the son of a legendary father on the throne". L'Equipe (France): "Victory for fairness. Schumacher flies off, Villeneuve reached his dreams". Le Figaro (France): "There is justice in sport, even in Formula 1. Liberation (France): "Fame for Villeneuve, gravel for Schumacher." Sun (UK): "Schumi, you've got what you deserved. Dirty tricks: Go to hell". The Mail (UK): "Michael Schumacher lost the titel and the last bit of sportsmanship he had". The Mirror (UK): "Schumacher: Champion or Cheat?" The Times (UK): "Schumacher lost more than a world drivers' championship in Jerez yesterday afternoon. He sacrificed his reputation in an act of such instinctive cynicism that he forfeited the right to sympathy. Those who came to canonise him stayed to condemn a fundamental flaw in his character." Again The Times: "It took two hours and 20 minutes after the collision for him to speak. And then, bare-faced, he actually turned the blame on Jacques Villeneuve. We felt we had heard it all until Schumacher's justification for his villainy." Once again The Times: "Worse things were said behind the pit lane. Italian supporters are more fickle than most and those who have been blessing Schumacher all season for making their famous marque so competitive were now devastating in recrimination: "He's a hooligan, and a German!" one said. Without sharing the Italian's racist connotation, one is left with some sympathy for the use of the word hooligan." Jody Scheckter in the Times: "I do not believe one Formula One driver does that in a race." The Telegraph (UK): "By passing Michael Schumacher's Ferrari and then surviving the German's ill-judged lunge at his Williams Renault, he turned potential calamity into a triumph of such proportion that it prompted a roar of approval among even the most neutral of professional observers, avenged Adelaide '94 for his team and inspired his crew of mechanics to dance in their white 'Billy Idol' wigs on the pit wall." Bild (Germany): "Schumacher was himself to blame for the crash. No question about it - 'Schumi' wanted to push Villeneuve out. But Michael - why on earth did you do it?" Salzburger Nachrichten (Austria): "The last laugh goes to the true champion". Journalism rule no. 1 says always listen to both sides. I just found one! Mark J. Frusciante (USA): "MS held his line into the turn and Villenueve comes sliding into him." There is a very informing graphic of the accident in the Electronic Telegraph at http://www.telegraph.co.uk:80/graphics/97/10/27/smegpa27.gif but it's about 350kb. Go, Mark, watch it! Thomas --
