Apparentely there are only 2 differences: - it doesn't has the secondary flash - it also lacks the beeper Of course it is cheaper (in france 600 FF, which is about $100). The Metz webpage (see link in mine) doesn't yet list this flash. I think the 40 MZ-2 is still on the catalogue, so now Metz has 3 flashs on the same range (NG 40 @ 50mm), but with different features. The 40 MZ-3 is the most complete. Between the 40 MZ-2 and the 40 MZ-1 a decision might be hard because: - the 40 MZ-1 has all (?) the improvements of the MZ-3, specifically, the compatibility with Nikon 3D metering, red-eye reduction, 24-105 zoom head, built-in diffuser for 20mm, remote wireless auto mode, and a mode that always places the zoom head in a setting one step wider than the lens. - the 40 MZ-2 has the secondary flash (very useful for bounce flash), and the beeper (I have mine turned off since I bought it).
