engineers. After being the Scientific Coordinator of the research group “Mathemat- ical Systems Theory” of the Center for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra - CMUC (1988-1992), F´atima joined the Institute of Systems and Robotics - ISR (1992), where she is a founding member and an active researcher. As leading in- vestigator, she assumed the scientific coordination of two research groups inside ISR - Coimbra, “Control Theory Group” (1992-2003) and “Control, Optimization and Computation Group” (since 2004). In addition, F´atima is one of the founding members (in 1994), of the Portuguese Association of Automatic Control (APCA), the National Member Organization of IFAC responsible for the organization of the international conferences CONTROLO. On the international scene, she served as a Member of the Administrative Council of EUCA, European Union Control Associa- tion, (2001-2009) and as member of the Technical Committee on Nonlinear Control Systems of IFAC, International Federation of Automatic Control, (2001-2009).
Among F´atima’s large scientific production, we highlight:
• 35 journal articles and 50 conference papers, with about twenty coauthors from several countries;
• numerous communications in conferences, 22 of which as invited speaker;
• 29 memberships of organizing and/or scientific committees of international
conferences;
• reviewer of Mathematical Reviews and Zentralblatt fu¨r Mathematik;
• participation in 13 (national and international) research projects;
• 6 Ph.D. theses supervised and advisor of 10 post-doc/Ph.D. projects;
• active collaboration with various foreign investigators.
Happily for F´atima’s friends and for those having worked or still work with her, F´atima is always full of enthusiasm in her academic career. So, the good news is that her legacy is still unfinished!
We would like to thank the authors who contributed to this volume. Finally, we also thank the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra, since the publication of this volume would not have been possible without their financial support.
