PREFACE
This special issue of Textos de Matem´atica is dedicated to our colleague Nat´alia Bebiano, celebrating her 60th anniversary.
Nat´alia Bebiano is a worldwide renowned and respected linear algebraist. She is a leading member of the Portuguese linear algebra community and a mentor of many young researchers.
Nat´alia Bebiano has made significant contributions to matrix theory and its applications ranging from the theory of matrices and operators on Hilbert and Krein spaces, the theory of numerical ranges of linear operators, deter- minantal ranges and the de Oliveira - Marcus conjecture, J-matrices, inverse spectral problems, matrix and operator inequalities and their applications to physics, permanents, to mathematical education and the history of mathemat- ics in Portugal. She has published so far more than 70 papers, most of them in high quality journals, together with more than 20 researchers. She has been an invited speaker of many international conferences. Moreover, she is the author of several scientific books.
In parallel to her scientific activities, she is an award winning writer with a book recommended in the Portuguese national reading plan and a devoted mother to her children.
We thank all the distinguished mathematicians who have contributed to this volume. Additional papers devoted to Nat´alia have also been published in other journals.
We would also like to acknowledge the financial assistance of CMUC - Centro de Matem´atica da Universidade de Coimbra.
