meantime, he decided to return to Coimbra at the end of the 1971/72 school year. He embarked on the vessel “Imp´erio” on the first of August 1972.
Thus, the grant which had been conceded by the Louren¸co Marques University was not taken advantage of. But, once in Coimbra, he did not abandon his studies of the materials indicated above, and in 1974 he left for England, where in 1977 he took his doctorate in Sussex with a thesis entitled “Embeddings of Spaces of Sobolev Type”. In Coimbra he followed a career as university professor until deciding to retire, for which his disciples and colleagues now offer just homage. Certainly it was due to the recollection of the times which he spent with me during those two years that I so enjoyed being in Mozambique that I was offered the pleasure of being his godfather in the traditional ceremony of the laying on of insignias by the prestigious University of Coimbra. And, once more, I am the object of a certain deference in having been given the opportunity to participate in this ceremony, for which I warmly congratulate Professor Jorge Ant´onio Sampaio Martins, for whom I wish the greatest happiness.
